Most Sikkim journeys begin at Bagdogra Airport, New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) or Pakyong Airport. The best gateway depends on your city, flight or train timing, budget and final destination inside Sikkim. This guide explains the practical differences and how to plan the onward mountain transfer.
Transport schedules, airport operations and road conditions can change. Reconfirm your flight or train directly with the operator and keep a realistic transfer buffer before departure.
Quick comparison
| Gateway | Best for | Typical onward plan | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bagdogra Airport | Most air travellers | Pre-booked taxi to Gangtok, Namchi, Pelling or another base | Allow time for baggage, traffic and mountain roads |
| NJP Railway Station | Train travellers and budget-conscious groups | Private or shared vehicle towards Sikkim | Late arrivals reduce comfortable same-day options |
| Pakyong Airport | Travellers with a confirmed operating flight | Shorter road transfer to Gangtok than Bagdogra | Schedules can be limited and weather-sensitive |
Reaching Sikkim from Bagdogra Airport
Bagdogra in West Bengal is the principal airport gateway for Sikkim. It handles scheduled domestic traffic and offers the broadest range of air connections in the region. The Airports Authority of India aerodrome information for Bagdogra identifies it as an IFR/VFR airport; operating details remain subject to current notices.
After collecting baggage, travellers normally continue by road. A private vehicle is the simplest option for families, senior citizens and groups with luggage. Shared vehicles can reduce cost but may involve waiting, fixed departure points and limited luggage space.
Approximate road-transfer planning
- Bagdogra to Gangtok: keep roughly 4–5 hours, with extra time in heavy traffic, rain or roadwork.
- Bagdogra to Namchi: often around 3–4 hours depending on the chosen route.
- Bagdogra to Pelling: generally a longer transfer; plan about 5–6 hours or more.
These are planning ranges, not guarantees. Mountain driving time depends on weather, traffic, route diversions and stops.
Reaching Sikkim from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station
NJP is the most useful rail gateway for Sikkim. It is connected to major Indian cities and has taxi services outside the station. The road routes from NJP and Bagdogra merge towards the Sikkim corridor, so onward travel times are broadly comparable.
Private taxi or shared vehicle?
A private taxi provides door-to-door service, scheduled pickup and space for luggage. It is especially useful after a long train journey. Shared vehicles are cheaper for solo travellers, but departures may be tied to passenger availability and a designated stand rather than your hotel.
If your train arrives late in the evening, consider staying near Siliguri and beginning the mountain journey after breakfast. Night travel offers fewer services, poorer visibility and less flexibility if roads are affected.
Reaching Sikkim through Pakyong Airport
Pakyong is Sikkim’s airport and is much closer to Gangtok than Bagdogra. However, it should be chosen only when a suitable flight is actually operating and confirmed for your date. The Airports Authority of India lists Pakyong as a domestic VFR airport, meaning operations can be more sensitive to weather and visibility. Consult your airline for the current schedule and status.
Do not build a tight same-day connection after a Pakyong flight. Keep the first night in or near Gangtok unless your confirmed arrival leaves generous daylight and your onward route is straightforward.
Documents to keep during the transfer
- Government photo identification for each traveller
- Flight or train ticket and hotel confirmation
- Driver and operator contact details
- Offline copies of important documents
- Permit documents when proceeding to protected areas later in the trip

Where should you spend the first night?
Gangtok is the most practical base for East and North Sikkim permits and departures. Namchi or Ravangla works well when the trip focuses on South Sikkim. Pelling is appropriate for a West Sikkim itinerary, though the direct transfer from the plains is longer.
Avoid arriving from the plains and continuing immediately into a remote high-altitude sector. A moderate first night improves rest, allows document checks and creates a buffer for delays.
How to book a reliable transfer
- Share the exact flight or train number, arrival time and passenger count.
- Confirm vehicle type and luggage capacity in writing.
- Ask whether parking, waiting and night charges are included.
- Keep the driver’s name and mobile number before arrival.
- For children or seniors, request planned meal and toilet stops.
- Never pressure the driver to compensate for a late arrival by speeding.
Road conditions and seasonal planning
Sikkim’s mountain roads can be affected by monsoon rain, landslides, construction and temporary traffic controls. During the rainy season, keep more time between your final Sikkim hotel and the departure gateway. In winter, fog and early darkness can also slow the plains transfer.
For an international flight or an important rail connection, a departure-side buffer night may be safer than relying on a long same-day drive from North or West Sikkim.
Suggested arrival-day plans
Morning arrival at Bagdogra or NJP
Meet the driver, stop for lunch on the way and continue to your first base in daylight. Keep the evening free for rest.
Afternoon arrival
Gangtok may still be practical, but avoid adding sightseeing. For a delayed flight or train, a Siliguri stay may be more comfortable.
Pakyong arrival
Transfer to Gangtok and keep the rest of the day flexible. Reconfirm the next day’s plans after the flight has landed.
