Sikkim weather changes sharply with elevation, valley exposure and season. Use this guide to choose a practical travel window—not to treat a state-wide forecast as a guarantee.

Season-by-season planning

Spring · March–May

Generally comfortable sightseeing weather, flowering landscapes and improving access. Pack layers: warm afternoons can become cool evenings, especially above Gangtok.

Summer · June

Milder mountain temperatures and increasing humidity. Pre-monsoon showers can affect visibility, so keep flexible outdoor plans.

Monsoon · July–September

Lush scenery, frequent rain and a higher likelihood of delays or route disruption. Add buffer time and avoid tight same-day flight or train connections.

Autumn & winter · October–February

Autumn often brings clearer views; winter is colder and higher routes may face snow, ice or temporary closure. Confirm access close to travel.

Weather varies by circuit

  • Gangtok and lower valleys: generally milder than North Sikkim’s high-altitude stops.
  • Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang: colder nights, rapid weather shifts and route-dependent access.
  • Silk Route: exposed bends and higher stays can feel substantially colder; snow may alter the route.
  • South and West Sikkim: elevation still matters; rain, fog and local road conditions can change drive times.

How to use a forecast

Check the forecast for the actual overnight stop, not only “Sikkim.” Recheck 72–48 hours before each mountain sector, keep one warm layer and rain protection in the day bag, and let the driver or local authority decide whether a road is safe.
