North Sikkim & Silk Route Travel Guide: Permits, Best Time & Packing Tips

Sikkim

North Sikkim and the Old Silk Route are two distinct Himalayan journeys. North Sikkim is generally planned around Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley, while the Old Silk Route runs through East Sikkim around Zuluk and Nathang Valley. This practical guide explains how to combine them responsibly without relying on fixed road times, guaranteed access or outdated permit information.

Understand the two travel corridors

North Sikkim: Most itineraries travel from Gangtok towards Lachen and Lachung. Depending on current access, travellers may visit Gurudongmar Lake from Lachen and Yumthang Valley from Lachung. Long mountain drives, high altitude and early departures are common.

Old Silk Route: This East Sikkim circuit usually includes places such as Zuluk, the winding mountain roads above Zuluk and Nathang Valley. The exact route and overnight plan depend on permits, road direction, weather and accommodation availability.

Combining both regions is rewarding but should not be rushed. Keep buffer time and avoid planning an immediate flight or train connection after returning from a remote sector.

Permits and documents

Several border and protected areas require permits. Requirements vary by destination, nationality and current government instructions. Applications for certain destinations are coordinated through registered travel operators. Carry original identification, the requested photocopies and recent photographs.

Use the official Sikkim Tourism permit information and current government notices as the final authority.

Best time to plan the journey

There is no single perfect month for every traveller. Spring is popular for flowering landscapes, autumn often brings clearer post-monsoon views, winter can be extremely cold, and monsoon journeys need greater flexibility because of rain and landslide risk. Snowfall, road repair, local restrictions and weather can alter any itinerary at short notice.

Altitude and health preparation

Some North Sikkim and Silk Route stops are at high altitude. A comfortable itinerary should allow gradual travel, adequate rest and honest assessment of each traveller’s health. Children, older travellers and anyone with heart, lung or other medical conditions should seek individual medical advice before booking.

What to pack

Pack for changing conditions rather than relying on a single heavy jacket. Even when Gangtok feels comfortable, remote valleys may be much colder.

Road travel and itinerary flexibility

Mountain travel times are affected by road condition, traffic, weather and permit checks. Start early when advised, keep expectations realistic and avoid comparing Himalayan driving times with plains travel. Mobile connectivity and digital payments may be unreliable in remote areas, so carry a reasonable amount of cash and share your plan with family before departure.

Responsible travel

Respect monasteries, village homes, local customs, military restrictions and photography rules. Do not litter, disturb wildlife or photograph restricted installations. Drones must never be flown without the required permission. Choose local services where practical and accept route changes when safety or community instructions require them.

Choose a suitable itinerary

Begin with your travel month, number of days, group profile and preferred comfort level. Travellers who want both corridors can compare the North Sikkim and Silk Route tour.
